- Tell staff before booking if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragments in the eye, or any implant. Some of these make MRI unsafe.
- Remove all metal: jewellery, hairpins, watch, belt, hearing aids, removable dentures and dental plates. Cards and phones stay in the locker.
- Wear loose clothes without zips. A gown is provided.
- Routine MRI needs no fasting. MRI with contrast, MRCP and abdominal MRI: fast for 4–6 hours. Bring a recent serum creatinine report (within 1 month) for contrast studies.
- The scan takes 20–45 minutes and the machine is noisy. Earplugs are given. Tell us if you are claustrophobic; sedation can be arranged with your doctor's advice.
- Pregnant? Tell staff before the scan.
